We got a "big car"

Well we bit the bullet and got the ginormous minivan. We were very close to getting a CR-V, but decided to go for the Odyssey because we'll probably run it into the ground and having the extra space will be nice. They also have deals on the Odyssey this weekend as well as rebates from Honda. They are also cleaning out the 08s right now to make room for the 09s so I think between those two things we got a pretty good deal because it was below invoice. However between the car purchase and starting the backyard, I feel like I'm hemorrhaging money. I guess we'll be eating Top Ramen for a while -- just like college.

Adam was with us for the car purchase and just slept the whole time with a brief awakening to eat and poop. Clearly he was not interested in our car purchase.

G was excited to see the "big car" and immediately christened it with hand prints on the windows and foot prints on the seats. Then he almost zoned out on the way to Ian's birthday party since it was nap time. We let him skip his nap or he'd miss the whole party and the Dalmatian bouncer which he was very excited about. The past few days he kept saying "big dog bouncer at Ian's birthday".

Here he is wiggin' out in the bouncer:

The other big event today was Adam meeting his maternal Grandparents. I think he slept through most of that too. G was completely out of control by the time they arrived and he was screaming and crying most of the time until we put him to bed. Ahhh good times.

I managed to kill our desktop computer today, so now I'm onto Dave's work laptop. I think I have a black thumb for computers. So pictures are slower to get uploaded.

First cold...

Thanks to big brother Adam is sick with his first cold. It's so sad to hear him all stuffed up and hacking up a lung. He's not coughing much and is mostly congested. We have the humidifier running by his bed so hopefully that gives him some relief. He is still such a mellow guy and I'm definitely enjoying that he's so easy going.

Today I went to the store with the two boys ALONE for the first time. I plopped the carseat in the basket and G rode in the top of the cart. I had to bribe G with a toy to get him to sit in the cart the whole time. It was a necessary trip because we are out of diapers for Adam! Definitely more challenging with two and much less cart space. I can't imagine going to Costco with the two of them because I would have no room for "stuff".

Adam enjoyed another nap at the pool during G's swim lesson. G is getting much better about doing things on his own too. Now I can wrap him in a towel and have him walk to the locker room to be changed. Before, he would always demand "Mommy carry you, please!" which really means "Mommy carry me, please."

And just to let everyone know, I'm totally exhausted! I need naps! I want more than 3 hours of consecutive sleep. Rant over.

R.I.P. hardrive #2 in 4 months

That's right I've had TWO hard drives conk out on me in 4 months! I was so scared because I had not done a back up since Adam was born and I thought I lost all his pictures! Luckily we were able to recover all the photos and that's all I care about. Now we are awaiting our Home Server so we don't have to go through this ever again! Between back ups and using the server we should be well covered. I'm just wondering if my laptop is trying to tell me to put it to rest.

Dad finally finished G's boxes for his room and they look great. I finally took pictures of the boys' rooms. Now Dave has to finish the growth chart I've been asking him to make forever....then tile bathrooms, yada yada the list goes on.

G's room:
A's room:

A chillin' with Granny in the shade by the pool.
This is what happens when you tell G to get in his carseat....he climbs the headrest.

Haircuts for the boys

Today we tried out the double stroller and walked to the store with Oskar. Sadly Oskar is out of shape because I'm out of shape and haven't walked him regularly. I'm going to start walking more regularly for both of our sakes!

Then in the afternoon we went and got G's haircut. His buddy Kaitlyn was nice enough to pass on a gift certificate for a haircut. G sat in a cool car for all of two seconds before he started screaming. We moved him to a regular seat and then finally I had to sit in the chair and hold him in my lap. He still screamed, but at least we were able to get the job done. When it was over the stylist gave him his first lollipop which he loved! Perhaps we can bribe him with lollipops in the future.

After the lollipop, we went to a taco shop for some lunch. Adam slept through all of these exciting events.
G was very worried about getting clean before eating. Got a little carried away with it...

Then in the evening Oskar got a much needed haircut too.

11 days old

After seeing Kyle (Connor's little brother) who is just a few weeks older than Adam and another playgroup baby I'm starting to get sad with each day that passes. He's my last little baby and I don't want him to grow up too fast. He's so fun to hold and snuggle and it's something G didn't really enjoy. G preferred to be put in his bouncer swaddled up with the vibrations on. If he was held it had to be upright, ALWAYS. And now G does not like to be held at all (unless I have my hands full) so I'm definitely enjoying that Adam likes to be held and hope it continues. However I'm wondering if it's us since the dog is also an anti-snuggler. haha

My parents are coming to meet Adam in just 8 days. I'm curious to see what they will think of him because he's very different than G was as a baby both in temperament and appearance. G looked like a baby sumo wrestler with a full head of hair while Adam looks more like a balding old man.

Tonight Burrito lost his belly button stump. I hope the dog didn't get it because
I don't know where it went, just that it was gone.

Head-butting

Head-butting seems to be G's method of getting attention. When I am feeding Adam, for the most part G does really well. He hangs around us, but keeps himself amused with toys or Oskar. However occasionally he just decides to head-but Adam. The only effective punishment I have found is to send him to his room. Then he comes out and apologizes to Adam. This behavior always seems to occur in the afternoon after his nap. In general G gets more rambunctious and difficult later in the day so I have to do a better job of keeping him distracted when I feed Adam later in the day.

Oddly enough G still asks to hold Adam all the time and likes to help with diaper changes. G brings me diapers and opens the wipes case. He has also been taking one wipe and wiping his face. Then he wipes Oskar and then he tries to wipe any toys in the vicinity. He even wiped the glider, but for some reason I can't get him to pick up his legos.

Today G was especially difficult in the afternoon and I sent him to his room a few times for head-butting and throwing toys. Dad couldn't come home soon enough!

Safety circle

Here's the latest and greatest from G's swim lessons.

First day alone

Getting up an hour before G, let me feed Adam and get him back to sleep before G woke up. Then I got Adam back to sleep and fed and dressed G. Amazingly we made it to swim class a bit early.

G did incredibly well at swim class considering I was the only one there. I told him his brother wanted to watch him swim and he was excited to show him. Of course Adam was zonked out the entire time and didn't see a thing. G even let one of the male instructors take him between his turns with Miss Tracy. She promised me he would take a good nap because he was almost constantly swimming today. BUT...

It took G FOREVER to take a nap! He finally did after Adam woke up from his 2 hour nap. So with their naps staggered I didn't get to take a nap! I'm still waking every 2-3 hours at night with Adam for at least 30 minutes so I'm pretty exhausted.

Off to the aquarium

We went to the Aquarium on Dad's last day off of work. G really enjoyed seeing all the "big fish", but Adam slept through most of the trip only to wake to poop and eat.

G's favorite was the circular tank with "fast fish" swimming in circles. He also liked the big tank with the fish and sharks and launching toy boats outside. He wouldn't touch anything in the tide pools or even the fake plastic starfish.

"His nose is way up there."In front of his favorite big tank.
Checking out the fake starfish, but careful not to get too close.
Oh no, G has cloned himself!
Can Adam save Dad and G from being eaten by the shark?

The brothers

Adam is clearly just like his brother in one way - he LOVES his pacifier. We don't give it to him often, but for photos we used it to calm him. When it's removed he goes from content to super upset in no time! He also likes to eat. G loved to eat until solids were introduced. Then he tried to adopt a snack only diet. Adam also loves the swaddle like big bro did. It was hard to give it up, but I couldn't find blankets big enough.

Here is Adam demanding his paci.
However Adam is much more laid back than his brother....for now. He tolerates a cradle hold, can be awake and not crying, and actually sleeps in his carseat! Oddly enough, Adam cries less than G does now. I used to hate my stroller and carseat because G would scream bloody murder in either of them. However now I see the benefits of the infant carseat because I can transport Adam from the car to stroller to the house and he stays asleep! I guess it's Adam's survival mechanism because with G demanding so much attention (still) he has to be a little more easy going.

At 1 week old Adam has surpassed his birth weight. Today he weighed in at 7lbs 9oz at the doctor's office. It'll be interesting to see how old he is when he reaches his brother's birth weight of 10lbs 10oz. After holding the little squirt so much everytime I pick up G or Oskar they feel like beef cakes! Changing Adam's diaper and the G's diaper is kind of funny too because of the size difference.

Newborn Photos

More planes and first bath

Today we took both boys to see more "big planes". G really liked this museum since there were lots of big planes and helicopters to check out. Dave had fun identifying all the planes (without use of the key) and their different features.
Adam wiped himself out checking out all the aircraft.
"Ohh, let's look at that plane, Daddy"

Then in the evening, G's friend Isaac and his parents came over to meet Adam. G and Isaac have always had a complicated relationship. They take swim classes together, go to playgroup together, took music together, Gymboree, and will take soccer together in the fall. They've known each other a while and have always fought over everything...steering wheels on the playground, toys, you name it. Today was no exception and one of hot items was Adam's toy ball. G is getting to be a little bully though because he would push Isaac or just swipe the toy he was holding simply because Isaac had it. I'm sure part of it was having Isaac at his house and sharing his toys, but part of it was fighting to fight with Isaac.

Then that night little Adam got his first bath. The poor kid is already getting the second kid treatment. I did the bath by myself while G was getting his bath. For G we had video and pictures and two parents washing him. For Adam I got pictures after his bath was done. I tortured the poor kid by making him sit in his tub naked for a few shots. I had to document the first bath though!

Busy busy busy

Friday G and Dad and Grandma and Grandpa went to a museum to check out "big planes". G had a great time. He didn't really enjoy the Star Trek exhibit, so maybe there is hope that he won't be an uber geek.
Then in the afternoon his buddies Ian and Tyler came to meet his baby brother. Each one held Adam for a little bit. Tyler seemed more interested when her Mom held the baby, but for the most part the kids just played and ignored Adam.

Saturday was the last day of soccer for the summer session. G got a medal (as did all the kiddos). He eagerly went up to get his hand stamp as he does after every lesson and ran away before they could put the medal around his neck. They got him to come back and put it around his neck, and he immediately ripped it off and ran back to Dad. Dad says it was a statement that he plays for the glory not the medals. haha

Hanging out with Dad
"Dad, you kick the ball with your foot like this"Check out the concentration, and open mouth.

Then after his nap we went over to celebrate Great Grandma's 97th birthday! He helped to make a birthday card for her and blow up balloons. G had great fun drinking punch, playing with shells, listening to steel drums, and wreaking havoc like normal.

Adjusting

Apparently Oskar is having a hard time adjusting to little Adam as well. Today he threw up twice! He's also been laying at our feet for most of the day. Normally he's by the back door keeping watch over the squirrels and birds or running around with his squeaky toys.

Little Adam now has a nickname - Burrito. Even G is calling Adam "Burrito" and it's kind of funny. Adam is swaddled a lot and looks like a baby burrito, thus the nickname.

G seems to be doing pretty well adjusting to Adam. For the most part he ignores the baby and goes about his day. However if little Burrito gets in the way, he is noticed and poked. Usually though G just notices him and wants to hold him. He really enjoys holding his baby brother, but doesn't hesitate to get up and walk away in the middle of this "job". Mom or Dad has to hover and play catch.

I can see G is going to have a hard time sharing his toys though. I bought a ball for Adam and G has claimed it as his. I tried to explain that it is Adam's, but he can play with it, but he says "No this is my ball". He does offer to share it with Adam and puts it in his lap. Maybe there is hope.

I want to hold baby brother

G asked to hold him and was very gentle with him. He pointed out all of Adam's body parts: feet, hands, nose, head, and the dog oh his shirt. It was pretty cute. He was also happy to have his picture taken with the baby and even tried to smile a cheesy smile a couple of times for the camera.

However G has had more timeouts since Adam came home. Even Grandpa had to give G a timeout! He's definitely seeking attention. He started hitting me when I was feeding Adam yesterday and then switched to pinching Dave. G has never handled change very well so I expected this to be a slow process. However he is very interested to watching Adam so I think I just need to find ways to get him to interact with Adam. Telling him to touch Adam's fingers and toes stopped him from trying to poke his eyes. However I'm scared of what it's going to be like in a few days when I have both boys by myself!

Little brother arrives....

Monday morning at 5am I started to having regular contractions. By the time Dave was ready to go to work I said we might want to go by the hospital today instead. G and Oskar were picked up by Grandma. We checked into triage and I was only 3cm dilated so they said I could go for a walk and come back or go home. I opted to walk for a couple of hours and when they checked me again I was only 3.5cm dilated so they sent me home.

I had the intention of walking once we got home, but instead laid on the couch. Then my contractions started to get more painful, but not closer together. I told Dave we should take maternity pictures. So in between my contractions we took a few pictures. Then we tried to eat dinner, but my contractions were so painful I told Dave we had to go to the hospital because I couldn't take it. Pretty much the whole day my contractions were 5 minutes a part.

The drive was so bumpy, long, and uncomfortable. I was in so much pain!!! When we got to triage I was seriously ready for an epidural, but they were full and I had to sit in the waiting area for a while. Then once I got a bed I had to wait for someone to hook me up and check me. All in all, it took 25 minutes to get to the hospital, 30 minutes to be seen, and then 10 minutes to get transported upstairs. In triage I was 7cm dilated -- no wonder I was in so much pain! Then when we got up to Labor and Delivery I was 8cm and begging for the epidural. The anesthesiologist was in with someone else so I continued to beg the nurse for drugs. Once I got the epidural Dave decided to go to the bathroom. In that short time, my water broke, I was fully dilated and ready to push. The doctor and Dave barely made it to see the baby born. Adam came out in literally minutes with just two contractions! Unfortunately Adam came too soon for Grandma to get to see his birth.

I was less than impressed with triage and wish they hadn't sent me home. That set me up for the most painful and miserable experience of my life! However after Adam was born I was feeling great. I was able to move around and get out of bed myself. I sent Dave home and told him to go to work the next day since I had to stay in the hospital. Adam and I did great by ourselves and we checked out after 24 hours. We are glad to be home and hoping that big brother G adjusts well to the new addition.

Adam was born on Aug 11th weighing 7lbs 5oz! I was certain he would be another Gigantor the Destroyer, but that was not the case. I had to send Dave out to the store to buy newborn size diapers before he picked us up at the hospital.

Ahoy Matey!

This morning Dad went to preschool with G. He actually did really well and even said his name during the welcome song! I was wondering if he would be clingy with Dad, but he did great. I still think G likes to torture me because with Dad he was content playing on the swings almost the whole time before class started. With me, he wants to climb up the rock walls, ladders, etc where I have to follow him or help him. Perhaps he just wants his baby brother to make an appearance so he's trying to get Mom moving.
G went on his third sailing trip today and this time he really enjoyed himself. The last two times he spent most of the time crying and trying to get his life jacket off. This time he had fun sailing with Grandpa, checking out the seals and seagulls, eating snacks, and just chillin' on the boat. He also really liked pushing the trailer with Grandma after the boat was hoisted out of the water.

Here he is sitting with Grandpa hoping to get to steer again.
He loved the seals! We must have passed that bouy three times.Pushing the trailer to load up the boat at the end.
